**dismissive handwave**

Last week I went to a networking event and met some truly lush people.

We hugged, we laughed, we gawped in wonder at how the magician guessed what country we were thinking of?!

Even more impressive, my new mate - she might not know it yet but she's never getting rid of me now - said to him, "You asked me to think of a number... you haven't guessed it yet!"

And HE said, "You're right, but I hope that's not what you really think of me"

Eh?!

*blink blink*

There I stood.

The only one out of the loop.

She knows the number.

He somehow knows the number.

SOMEONE TELL ME THE FRIGGIN' NUMBER!!

He says...

666

AND. IT. WAS.

I hope that's not what you really think of me = I hope you don't think I'm the devil 😮

So yeah, met puh-lenty of super cool people.

I also met one, just one, who managed to tap into my 'why am I so damn easy to dismiss?' complex.

You know the feeling?

Somehow you've found yourselves thrust together, two strangers in an awkward tete-a-tete, and they manage to muster the obligatory 'what you do' only to effectively throw 'oh, you're another copywriter' in your face.

Followed by, "...and who do you help?"

Service-based business owners, mostly coaches and consulta-

**dismissive handwave**

"Ah k. The usual"

[INSERT BRAIN EXPLOSION]

Jolly back three years and I can't begin to tell you the grief this interaction would have caused me. I'm talking potential WEEKS of my partner listening to me analyze the crap out of it.

>> WAS IT ME? OR ARE THEY JUST A KNOB?

>> AM I THAT UNIMPRESSIONABLE?!

>> Am I SUCH a waste of time?!

>> TELL ME!!

His reply would sound something like, "You don't even know them... who cares"

Damn, his immense wisdom.

These days, that's how I roll.

Now, my thought is simply, "MOVING ON!"

Because in this case, as soon as I did, I had far superior convos with people who were both interesting and interested.

#Shocker

Whether IRL or online, we don't try to convince people who aren't interested. We deepen our relationship with those who are.

If you know your ideal client, you're clear about why you exist and the message you want to share, keep sharing it!!

You'll get a whole bunch of dismissive handwavers along the way.

Wish them well - or, if you're the passive-aggressive type, wish they always choose the supermarket trolley that veers to the left.

Either way, our job is to consistently seek out those who are attracted to who we are, what we believe in, and of course... what we offer.

That's why I ❤️copy.

Understand yourself. Understand your IC. Get clear. Share the message. Repeat the message. Present your 'sales argument'. Repeat. Speak to your cause. Repeat. Continue to tweak and strengthen. Attract those who wish they'd found you sooner. Repel the dismissive handwavers.

You put the good words down, it's up to them if they wanna pick them up.

I proper enjoyed myself at the networking event, it was a belter.

Especially the part where I bashed into someone on the way out and apologised profusely...

...only to find out I was talking to a table.

But that unfortunate conversation did remind me why I drool over effervescent wording that makes a lasting impression. Because you'll either be like me and need that in your corner #ThankGodICanWriteForSales OR you're a ninja networker whose efforts could pay off double if only your online presence matched your offline presence.

Either way, anything to avoid running into an "How did I end up talking to you?" igno is a win in my socially anxious book 😜

(Because I'll tell ya this for nowt, I'll NEVER go out of my way to win you around. In this life, you get what you give, chica).

Until next week,

Emma x

Hang on a second! Need some of that HERE I AM, COME 'N' GET ME attitude in your copy? 😁👇

I’m writing to you today from my sick bed. Snot-riddled tissues pepper my duvet, each one hoping I’ll quit re-using them 'til my finger pokes through and just get a damn fresh one.Poor sods. This makes 6 days of being what I hate most - a mouth breather. *shudders* So yeah, I’ve been pretty Moody Mary this week on account of the lack of oxygen and a complete inability to think clearly. Which is why it was NOT cool when, on Thursday, my Linkedin account got hacked! YES, I DID FREAK OUT. “Holy...

Surely *everyone* has that relative who’s batshit-bonkers? Totally lovable, utterly random, and at risk of having a meltdown at any given moment because ‘I’m constantly either a bit too hot or a bit too cold, there's no in-between!’. No? For me, it’s Auntie Ange. We love her (even though she can’t look left). #NoJoke Because, over another quiche lunch - “everyone likes quiche, don’t they” - she comes out with gems like this… “He’d be good-looking if he didn’t have a head” She was telling us...

**voicenote to client** "...how does Wednesday look to chat about Jan newslett- OI! *bang, bang, bang* GET AWAY FROM MY BINS!! *BANG, BANG* GO ON! - Sorry about that... some magpie keeps poking holes in our bins before the collection men arrive" And that's how it all began. 5 days before we were due to hand the keys back to our Landlady, I swooped up an obligatory 'gotta share this with my list' story. #ClassicEmma (This would be a good time to remind anyone playing catch-up that we've moved...
